Niki was only 18 months old when she was found along with 10 other horses in a pen. From the road you could see ribs on many of the horses.
Her condition was critical and she had very little strength to get into a trailer, but after much patience and coaxing and with some food she was able to get in. She was trailered a short distance to a foster home. It was feared that she would not make it through the night.
The veterinarian checking on her determined that she was blind from being so starved, had a large hernia on her stomach and her muscles had atrophied something terrible and she had a severe heart murmer. She had very little meat on her bones.
She was watched night and day and it was a miracle that she was able to pull through the whole ordeal. It had taken about a year before she was able to see again, the hernia removed and she became a normal horse again.
She was adopted to a family who assisted with her nursing to health. Today she is shown as a English horse and competes regularly and shows no signs of any health issues from her starvation.
It truly was a miracle that she was able to recover and now leads a normal life.
